What Happens During a Hypnosis Session
Many clients are nervous before their first session, wondering “what happens during a hypnosis session?” A typical session lasts 60-90 minutes, is completely safe, and you remain in control the entire time. Hypno Coach Youssef’s Rabat practice ensures every client feels comfortable and informed before starting. Understanding the process in advance helps you relax into the experience and get the most out of your session.
Step 1: Initial Consultation (15-20 minutes)
We discuss your goals, challenges, and medical history to tailor the session to your needs. You can ask any questions about hypnotherapy, and we’ll explain the process in detail. This is also where Youssef assesses your hypnotizability and preferred learning style to customize the induction method. Some clients are visual and respond best to guided imagery, while others are more kinesthetic and need body-based relaxation cues.
Step 2: Induction (10-15 minutes)
Youssef guides you into a relaxed, trance-like state using progressive muscle relaxation, guided imagery, or breathing techniques. You’ll feel deeply relaxed, but remain aware of your surroundings and in full control. Common sensations include a feeling of heaviness or lightness in the limbs, a floating sensation, and a detached awareness of the room. Your critical conscious mind steps aside, allowing direct communication with the unconscious mind where habits, emotions, and automatic responses are stored.
Step 3: Therapeutic Suggestions (20-30 minutes)
In the trance state, Youssef delivers targeted suggestions to address your goals (e.g., reduce anxiety, quit smoking, improve confidence). You can reject any suggestion that doesn’t align with your values, and you won’t do anything against your will. The suggestions are carefully worded in positive, present-tense language that your unconscious mind can accept and act upon. Youssef may also use metaphors, visualization, and regression techniques to reframe past experiences that underlie current issues.
Step 4: Awakening (5 minutes)
Youssef guides you out of the trance state, and you’ll feel refreshed and relaxed. We’ll discuss your experience and assign self-hypnosis homework if needed. Most clients describe the feeling as similar to waking from a deeply restful nap. You can drive, work, and carry on with your day immediately after.
What Does Hypnosis Actually Feel Like?
Clients often describe the trance state as a pleasant, focused relaxation similar to the moment just before falling asleep, when you are still aware of your surroundings but deeply at ease. Some compare it to being absorbed in a movie or a good book, where the outside world fades away. You can still hear Youssef’s voice and respond if needed. Time may feel compressed — a 45-minute suggestion phase can feel like only 10 minutes.
Common Myths Debunked
- You won’t get stuck in trance — your unconscious mind will naturally bring you out of trance if left alone
- You won’t reveal secrets or lose control — you remain aware and in charge throughout
- You won’t be unconscious or asleep — hypnosis is an awake, focused state
- You can open your eyes and stop the session at any time — you are always in control
